The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a massive all-weather deep draft port at Vadhavan, near Dahanu in Maharashtra, with a budget of Rs 76,000 crore. This port is expected to become one of the top ten ports globally upon completion.

Key Features of Vadhavan Port
- Location and Budget: The port will be situated around 110 km from Mumbai in the eco-sensitive Dahanu taluka of Palghar district. The project budget includes land acquisition costs.
- Joint Venture: The port will be developed by Vadhavan Port Project Ltd., a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority Ltd. (JNPA) with a 74% stake, and Maharashtra Maritime Board holding the remaining 26%.
- Phased Development: The port will be built in phases, with the first phase handling 15 million TEU containers and the second phase expanding to 23.2 million TEUs.
- Comprehensive Infrastructure: The port will feature nine container terminals, multipurpose berths, liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a Coast Guard berth.

Vadhavan port is the 13th major port under India's Sagarmala initiative, aiming to make Indian ports significant contributors to the GDP. Despite its potential, the project has faced opposition due to environmental concerns and its impact on local fishermen. Efforts have been made to address these issues, including initiatives to mitigate environmental damage and support local communities.
Strategic Importance
The Vadhavan port will serve as a crucial hub for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and the International North-South Transportation Corridor (INSTC). The world-class maritime terminal facilities will promote public-private partnerships and leverage modern technologies to handle mega vessels on international shipping lines.
Government Support for Renewable Energy
In addition to the Vadhavan port, the Union Cabinet has approved a viability gap funding (VGF) scheme of Rs 7,453 crore for the country's first set of offshore wind power projects. This initiative includes funding for offshore wind energy projects off the coast of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu and upgrading two ports to meet logistics requirements for these projects.

- आर्थिक प्रभाव: यह परियोजना पीएम गति शक्ति कार्यक्रम के तहत आती है, जो आर्थिक गतिविधियों को बढ़ावा देने और लगभग 12 लाख व्यक्तियों के लिए प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष रोजगार के अवसर पैदा करने का वादा करती है।
- कनेक्टिविटी: मंत्रिमंडल ने पोर्ट और राष्ट्रीय राजमार्गों के बीच सड़क संपर्क और मौजूदा रेल नेटवर्क और आगामी समर्पित रेल माल गलियारे के लिए रेल लिंक की स्थापना को भी मंजूरी दी है।

वधावन पोर्ट के अलावा, केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल ने देश की पहली सेट ऑफशोर विंड पावर परियोजनाओं के लिए 7,453 करोड़ रुपये की वायबिलिटी गैप फंडिंग (VGF) योजना को मंजूरी दी है। इस पहल में गुजरात और तमिलनाडु के तट पर ऑफशोर विंड एनर्जी परियोजनाओं के लिए धन और इन परियोजनाओं की लॉजिस्टिक आवश्यकताओं को पूरा करने के लिए दो पोर्ट के उन्नयन के लिए धन शामिल है।
